How to get here?
There are no direct flights to the Island of Mozambique (Ilha de Moçambique). Nampula is the nearest airport, which is about 200km from the coast. Following this route, it is possible to rent a car in Nampula or catch a “chapa” (local public transport).
If you are driving, follow the road that takes you to Nacala, and look for the sign for Ilha de Moçambique (visible around Monapo). It will take about 2 hours and the road is in good condition.
When you arrive you will have to cross a bridge. You need to pay a fee to cross the bridge. It is open 24 hours a day.
If you decide to catch a “chapa”, they depart at Av. Dos Trabalhadores in Nampula (near the train station).
The island is relatively small (about 1 square kilometer); so, the easiest way to get around is by foot – about 20 minutes from one end to the other, only 3 blocks wide. You can also rent bicycles for a day.
On the island there is also informal, also known as, semi-collective transportation comprising of a minibus with 15 seats and buses with 35 seats – they depart every day at 3 o’clock and 4 o’clock respectively, from the Island to Nampula, and from the Island to Nacala.
There are minibusses that collect on the island and others in the mainland of the Island of Mozambique.
